These mind mapping software companies have really got to take a step back and look at their pricing. The value added just doesn't compute when you can get a program like MindNode Pro http://mindnode.com for the Mac for twenty dollars. For a little more you can get an iPhone app and exchange files through Dropbox. Is it worth $230 to put videos in a mind map? For what they're asking for this run-of-the-mill mind mapping software you could buy the venerable Tinderbox http://eastgate.com. I don't understand how companies like MatchWare and, to a greater degree, MindJet manage to survive. Seriously, check out MindNode Pro for mind mapping on a Mac. If you really learn how to use it and it doesn't satisfy all of your requirements I'll be pretty surprised. If you need to do things with a mind map that MindNode Pro doesn't do, you're probably asking too much of what is basically just an outliner. Check out OmniOutline, perhaps. I'm not affiliated with any of these companies, just a happy user. These prices just mystify me.
Arthur; your comments are valid to a point regarding cost. The developers may counter with “if you want functions and capabilities that exponentially enhance and improve the ways and formats available; you’re going to have to pay for them”.
I’ve taken a look at Mind node; it’s a basic wire frame kind of product; one in which would not accomplish the polished and professional approach to visual information management using Matchware MindView and MindManager.
The value ad for information management is in the awesome current and assured future development of the likes of MindView and MindManager.
I do like your suggestion of exchanging files through Dropbox; but here’s the reality: Matchware and Mindjet have collaborative subscription models associated with their products. Mindjet have a free basic level access to Connect, and Matchware have their own subscription associated with cloud services that enable heavy duty file sharing too.
So in my opinion, the price range of these products reflects the current and future development. These products are cross platform and cloud based also; so it makes absolute sense to buy into their functions and capabilities.
The investment or value ad for academic and corporate business is surely within the allowable financial budgets. In my experience; these products pay for themselves in the long run.
